Developing Your Soft Skills

Technical abilities and familiarity with trends impacting the accounting and finance field are critical for doing your job well. But did you know that soft skills can be as important to your career success as your financial know-how? In fact, in a recent survey by Robert Half International, 75 percent of executives polled said that verbal, written and interpersonal skills are more valuable now for financial professionals than five years ago.

Despite this, only 37 percent of executives said their firms provide formal training in this area. That means you’ll likely need to develop these skills on your own. Here are some tips for nurturing the softer side of your professional resume:

  • Seek feedback. The best way to discover how you come across to others is by asking them. While your annual performance review will often include a discussion of your interpersonal skills, it’s wise to meet periodically with your supervisor to discuss areas for improvement. Trusted colleagues can also be a valuable source of feedback.
  • Practice your speaking skills. Companies favor employees who appear polished and at ease while making presentations or speaking with clients. To improve your public speaking abilities and conversational skills, you might take classes or join networking groups. Other methods include volunteering to lead projects, getting involved in community organizations that call for leadership skills, and facilitating discussion groups or meetings.
  • Learn to listen. Listening intently to others makes them feel valued. Focus on what your colleague is saying, and avoid the temptation to interrupt. Wait to formulate a response until the person has finished talking. You might want to paraphrase or jot down notes to make sure you have fully understood.
  • Write clearly. Well-written memos, reports, and e-mails are important contributors to professional success. A business writing class at your local community college can sharpen your syntax, grammar, and clarity, allowing you to better focus your messages.
