GOP 'Pledge To America' Lays Out Republican Plans Post-Midterm Elections

[print version]

GOP ‘Pledge to America’ Includes Repeal of 1099 Provisions, Continuation of Tax Cuts
September 23, 2010
FEI Summary

Today, the Republicans released “A Pledge to America,” and with the midterm elections around the corner, this document will be a key indicator of the GOP agenda post-November.

The document outlines several key areas the Republicans plan to address stating, “We pledge to advance policies that promote greater liberty, wider opportunity, a robust defense and national economic prosperity.”

Below, are the key areas in the pledge:

·         Job Creation and Making America More Competitive. This consists of repealing the Section 1099 requirement under the health-care bill; stopping all tax increases that are scheduled to go into effect January 2011; giving small businesses up to 20-percent tax deductions off their business income; and stopping excessive and costly federal regulation.

·         Cutting Spending and the Size of Government. This includes, but is not limited to, canceling any unspent stimulus dollars; cutting government spending to pre-stimulus levels; implementing strict budget caps and cutting discretionary spending; requiring full accounting for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; and rooting out government waste.

·         A Plan to Repeal and Replace the Government Takeover of Health Care. These goals include repealing the health-care takeover of 2010 and replacing it with “common-sense” reforms, including allowing the purchase of health insurance across state lines and the removal of tax-funded abortions.

·         A Plan to Reform Congress and Restore Trust. This includes giving congress at least three days to read bills; doing away with “must-pass” bills; requiring every proposed bill in Congress to state the “Constitutional authority upon which the bill is justified;“ and allowing amendments to spending bills in order to cut spending.

·         National Security. This includes improving immigration reform by giving states rights to enact local enforcement; securing our borders; imposing strict sanctions against Iran; ensuring terrorists are tried in military courts; and a strong missile-defense policy.
