I need a short list of compensation consultants with expertise in the design, strategy and implementation of executive-compensation strategies. I would prefer companies that have a practice in Texas.

These national firms are very good, and have local branches throughout the U.S.:
- Towers & Perrin;
- Hewitt Associates, which is our lead vendor;
- Watson Wyatt, a company we also use;
- Buck Consultants, which has a parent in Dallas;
- CCA (Chicago Consulting Actuaries);
- AON; and
- Mercer. Mercer tends to be more expensive than the rest.
The consulting product is essentially a commodity, and you should go where the human chemistry is best. Every location is different.
We just did a major request for proposal. We went with the best match and forced them to price off the lowest. It worked well. I suggest simply Googling “actuary” for additional names of small providers, if this is what you are seeking.
