Today FEI sent a letter to Senate leadership to address concerns with the proposed legislation "Energy Security Through Transparency Act of 2009" - S. 1700. Attached is a copy of the final letter. The letter agreed with S. 1700 overall goal of encouraging transparency so as to help citizens in resource rich countries hold their governments more accountable on the use of revenues from extractive industries. However, FEI objected to S. 1700 and other bills that would use the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) reporting to advance social objectives that are unrelated to its primary mission of protecting investors, maintaining fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitating capital formation.
