Job Title: Director, Government Affairs
Department: Government Affairs
Reports to: Vice President, Accounting Policy and Government Affairs
JOB SUMMARY:
The Director, Government Affairs, implements FEI’s advocacy and policy strategy and manages its Washington, D.C. office. The Director works with advocacy committees to identify emerging policy issues for FEI members, and is responsible for a broad portfolio of policy issues. The Director, under the direction of the Vice President, Accounting Policy & Government Affairs, will serve as lead liaison with Congress and the Administration on policy issues, directing the analysis, development and promotion of administrative and legislative strategies and policies that advance the mission of Financial Executives International.
The individual should possess strategic policy and tactical thinking; have government and/or business experience in government policy and a strong sense of association process. The Director will be expected to juggle multiple responsibilities, give and take direction, and think/ write coherently on the critical issues aligned with the organization’s mission and goals. Also requires individual to have strong team building skills, have superb communication and people skills and the ability to manage multiple committees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Develop and manage advocacy and policy strategy and engage FEI’s membership and leadership in the implementation.
· Oversee the development of technical work product on all non-accounting issues including corporate tax, financial regulation, economic policy, employee benefits, etc.
· Develops and maintains a strong, flexible, collaborative and effective policy team which works together with clarity, integration, and accountability.
· Serve as one of FEI spokespersons on legislative and regulatory issues, including media contacts.
· Oversee advocacy committee activities and the activities of the various Company Roundtables. Serve as staff liaison to various FEI advocacy committees.
· Work effectively with Members of Congress, Congressional Staffs and Sr. Administration officials.
· Manage the overall budget for the Government Affairs Department
· Manage the relationships with contractors and/or consultants.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Masters degree, MBA or JD in political science, communications, or related field is required
Position requires 8+ years of experience in policy, advocacy and government affairs and 5+ years of supervisory experience.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Demonstrated capability to work effectively with Members of Congress, Congressional Staffs, caucuses, senior Administration officials at the highest levels, leadership of federal agencies, and others in federal government, as well as experience engaging culturally and ethnically diverse audiences, constituents and partners a plus.
- Ability to multi-task on numerous projects, large and small, in both collaborative and independent situations.
- Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills a must.
- Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
- Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities, give and take direction, and think/write coherently on the critical issues aligned with the organization’s mission and goals.
- Hill or administration experiences a strong plus.
- Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style.
- Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.
