Foreign Trade Zone Status

[print version]

I am looking for data in making a decision to set up a warehouse with foreign trade-zone status, for export/import to Latin America and South America.

Brian Zydzik (zydzikb@putzam.com)

Response:

Our company develops warehouses and also obtains and maintains FTZ status for warehouses. I have asked our in-house expert to respond to this question. See the forwarded e-mail below, as well as the two attachments to this e-mail.

I hope this useful. Please contact Brandi Hanback directly for additional information.

Santo F. Curro (scurro@rockgrp.com )

Attached are two documents that may be useful to the inquirer. The first is an overview of benefits, and the second is a feasibility questionnaire. We offer savings analysis at no charge if the data is provided to us.

Depending on the location, the land may be designated as a foreign trade zone already, which would shorten the process considerably, so you will need to determine this first. If no site has been selected, we can provide information on Rockefeller FTZs in New Jersey or California for existing buildings or build to suits. Additionally, the Charleston or Salt Lake City locations are build-to-suit options.

The second phase of setting up the warehouse is activation. Activation occurs through the local customs port of entry. It includes an application, inventory control, and recordkeeping set-up, procedures manual, security inspection, background investigations, and an FTZ operator’s bond. We can provide consulting assistance as needed with these issues or help the importer identify a third-party operator capable of providing such services.

Please let us know if we may provide additional information.
