President’s Address To The Nation On The Economy September 24, 2008
FEI Summary
On Sept. 24, 2008 President George W. Bush made an address to the nation on the economy, specifically on the need for Congress to expedite passage of legislation supporting the administration’s plan to purchase up to $700 billion of troubled assets from financial institutions, mainly subprime mortgages and mortgage-backed assets.
He discussed the urgency of the proposal, and the potential dire economic consequences if it did not pass.
“There is a spirit of cooperation between Democrats and Republicans, and between Congress and this administration,” said the President. “In that spirit, I've invited Senators McCain and Obama to join congressional leaders of both parties at the White House tomorrow [September 25] to help speed our discussions toward a bipartisan bill.”
