financial executive magazine: guidelines
Features generally run from 1,400 to 2,200 words (2-3 pages), and cover stories are longer (4-6 pages). Opinion-type columns are shorter, from 750 to 1,200 words. All articles must be timely upon publication. Major articles should be suggested three months in advance of publication, and be completed one month in advance. While we take telephone calls, we prefer email queries that include an outline or synopsis of the proposed article.
In general, we offer very limited opportunities for freelancers. About 60-65% of the feature edit in most issues is generated by outside consultants and other business experts (non-paid), with the rest filled by staff copy and a few freelance pieces.
That's not to say we don't look at high-quality ideas or new voices. The editors urge anyone really interested in writing for the magazine to look at our editorial calendar, pick a subject in your area of expertise and offer a well-thought-out pitch that you think works for our audience of senior corporate finance executives.
Please allow a lead-time for submissions of 2-3 months, and send to Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Marshall or Executive Editor Ellen M. Heffes.
